Expecting a child abroad is a big undertaking, and China’s top cities are well equipped for it: international obstetrics departments, modern delivery suites and pediatric follow-up under one roof.
Choosing your provider
Public hospital VIP/international obstetrics wings offer experienced obstetricians and neonatal intensive care at moderate cost; private international hospitals add hotel-style rooms, partner-accompanied visits and fully English-speaking teams. Decide early — popular providers book up months ahead.
The prenatal schedule
Chinese maternity care follows a thorough schedule: monthly visits early, biweekly after 28 weeks, weekly near term, with ultrasounds at key milestones, glucose screening, and blood work. Bring records from your home provider in English; results are shared digitally in most international departments.
Delivery and after
Epidural analgesia is widely available in international departments — confirm in advance. Expected hospital stay is typically three to five days for delivery. After birth, hospitals handle newborn screening and vaccinations, and pediatric follow-up can continue at international clinics. Note that citizenship and documentation questions depend on your home country’s rules — check with your consulate about registering the birth.
With the right hospital chosen early, most international families find the experience organized, professional and reassuring from first scan to discharge.
